What Legacy Are You Creating?
I recently watched Dr. James Dobson’s Legacy video. Wow. What an incredible story of a family legacy.
I’ve never thought much about legacy or what it means. Often, life just seems to happen, and keep happening without much direction or even thought. Sure we have our goals and plans that WE want for our future and possibly our families future. But at least for me, I just let life control the direction of my path. The direction of future generations.
Watching Dr. James Dobson passionately tell the story of his family legacy is such a testimony of why leaving a legacy is important and even why we should continually work on leaving that for our families.
To leave a legacy means to leave a future for our children.
To leave a legacy means to leave a future for our children. We often hear that history repeats itself. I’m not sure if that is a good thing or not. But I know if we don’t create a legacy, that the future of our children will be left to just history. They will only know the facts of what the past was like.
They will only know their ancestors based on what they did to survive.
Just knowing history leaves the future generations to life controlling the path for them. No heritage is created. Possibilities are left in the dust. There isn’t much hope.
After watching and thinking about this video, I’ve realized that I don’t even know if my ancestors left a legacy. I don’t know anything but the facts. (It’s time to start doing some digging! – check back for a future post on how I will learn and document our family legacy)
Even worse, I don’t really feel that I’m leaving a legacy for my children. Life has controlled my direction, my path, for so long that I’ve become complacent to living. Can you relate?
Events have steered me this way and that.
Sure, I’ve done’ a few good things here and there to make for a better future for my family. But have I prayed for the future generations of our family? Have I followed the path that the Lord has laid before me. Am I making a difference that will make an impact on the future, for my family?
This is not a beat-me-up session, but an a-ha moment. One of those times that I’m back in control and it’s time to steer this boat where it’s called to go.
It’s time to start creating a legacy for my children’s children!
Just as it says in Proverbs 13:22, “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous”, the material things of this world have no significance to the future of our children, but leaving an inheritance, a legacy, will create a hope and future for generations to come.
